TICOS MONTHLY UPDATE - MAY 2007
April was another very busy month in the development of the Tourism Industry Carbon Offset Service (TICOS). Interest continues to grow and we remain on target to work with 50 tour operators this summer, making TICOS the biggest supplier of carbon offset services to UK tour operators. During the past months:
- A further 3 tour operators have signed up with TICOS to offer carbon offset programmes to their customers and a further 6 are under consideration.
- We have agreed to work with a number of ski tour operators to develop carbon reduction programmes in ski resorts in the Alps and North America.
- We have, at long last, developed a formula which allows us to consider projects of afforestation and tree planting and to calculate their carbon savings.
- Following a visit in April, we have developed our first tailor made carbon reduction programme for a tour operator (The Gambia Experience) to support specific projects in the Gambia.
- We have been asked by a number of individual tourists and corporate business suppliers to develop a way in which they can buy in to TICOS projects. We hope to have a system in place to accommodate this demand shortly.
- In the past month we have had approaches from a number of international agencies and destinations seeking to work with us to develop programmes and projects using the TICOS model.
- TICOS was confirmed as the chosen offset method by AITO at its AGM in April.
- We have commissioned a solar engineer to work with us to identify further projects in Africa which will help to reduce CO2 emissions and create jobs for local communities.
