TICOS Project Criteria

To our knowledge TICOS is currently offering a wider range of project opportunities than any other carbon offset service. All types of projects that lead to a reduction in carbon emissions will be considered for funding, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, afforestation, reforestation and avoided deforestation.  We have commissioned our own research for forestry projects entitled 'Forestry projects as voluntary carbon offset; an up to date consideration of all of the issues involved'. Please contact us if you wish to view this report.

TICOS projects must meet the following criteria to be eligible for funding.

  1. Projects can be located anywhere in the world that is a known tourism destination.
  2. Projects must demonstrate a real additional and measurable carbon benefit.
  3. Projects must demonstrate wider social and sustainable development benefits which favour the environment, wildlife, pro poor policies, and education and community improvements.
  4. Projects can be nominated by any of our preferred partners.  TICOS is committed to working with a range of partners to achieve meaningful climate change benefits for the companies using our services.  Many of the projects we support have been submitted by members of major international NGO's and voluntary organisations and charities.  In particular, we have actively sought out project proposals in tourism destinations which are also World Heritage sites and natural areas being managed by members of the World Commission for Protected Areas.
  5. Projects are accepted from any country irrespective of whether or not it is a signatory of the Kyoto protocol or has a regulated emissions programme.
  6. It is a condition of our support that all offsets are allocated to us to pass on to you in the form of a certificate of offset.  We then 'retire' this offset on behalf of the company so that there can be no element of double counting.
  7. The project would not be able to go ahead without full or part funding from TICOS.

TICOS has its own operating standard and has also recently developed its own project verification and validation standard; 'The TICOS Validation and Verification Standard (November 2007)'. Visit our project validation page for more information.

If your project meets the above criteria and you would like to source funding from us, then please visit our application page.
