Name of Project: Jiuzhaigou National Park Alternative Energy & Education Programme

Location: Sichuan Province, China

Jiuzhaigou is the leading national park in China. Set up in 1978, it is a UNESCO-IUCN World Heritage site UN Man and the Biosphere reserve. It will host the Asia-Pacific World Heritage Site conference in October 2007 and be a major window on China during the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

This project plans on introducing new energy and waste systems for local traditional Tibetan communities in the park and in the park buffer zone. Alternative heating, cooking, light, building design and waste disposal, composting and fuel wood alternatives will be researched and implemented, as well as new energy and waste systems for the park itself.

This project aims to showcase alternative energy and waste options, with an educational as well as practical focus. By developing and showcasing technologies that help conserve natural resources in an important protected area, lessons and examples can be extended to other national parks in the region and the rest of the country.

The overall goal of the project is to have 100 decentralised energy and waste systems inside the parks and in local communities in five years.

Additional benefits of the project:

This project is set to run over a two year period.
