The Parc marin de Mohéli (Moheli Marine Park) is a co-managed protected area established in 2001. It is administered by representatives from local communities, the tourism sector and the government. It was a finalist in the Equator Initiative Award and, in 2002, it received an award at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. The award was in recognition of the innovative manner in which the park has been established as a partnership initiative between the local community and the government.
In conjunction with the creation of the Moheli Marine Park, some local village associations decided to build traditional buildings for tourist accommodation. The local people offer rustic lodging and traditional meals. This project aims to support this initiative by improving facilities and reducing the bungalows' energy costs. Most of the villages on Mohéli do not have electricity. This project aims to fit the bungalows with solar power generation.
This project aims to provide solar energy in ecotourism units (bungalows) and ecotourism information centers. There are twenty-two bungalows for consideration in the six villages of Ouallah 1, Ouallah 2, Nioumachoua, Hoani, Miringoni and Itsamia.
In addition to making carbon savings, the project will help to maintain local job opportunities and increase support for conservation. Mohéli Island has exceptional biodiversity: the beach is one of the major nesting sites for Green Turtles and the forest supports numerous endemic species, including the endangered Livingstone's Fruit Bat.
